It all started in a hen house
|
 |
The nursery tradition started in 1884, when Thomas Larsen’s great grandfather made his first greenhouse by putting windows in one side of the family hen house. Since then three generations have decided to carry on the family tradition. We are quite proud of today’s success in combining the old-fashioned skills and traditions with modern technology, to maintain an ongoing process of development.
Grandfather’s inspiration
In the Gardener’s Own brand name the family is represented by Svend Larsen, the grandfather of the present owner.
Development began in earnest when Svend Larsen built the first actual greenhouses at the beginning of the 1930s. His old supplier number was 50008, and we have been lucky in being allowed to take it over as a reminder of his early interest in the nurserymen’s first marketing organisation.
We are pleased to be able to use an original photograph of Svend Larsen in our trade mark. He is the inspiration for all our efforts to supply products of consistent high quality.
We hope that our plants will spread sunlight and happiness wherever they are planted.
Gartneriet Møllerhøj a/s
Gartneriet Møllerhøj a/s is situated at the heart of Denmark’s largest nursery area in Stige near Odense. The Nursery has been in the hands of the present owner, Thomas Kjær Larsen, since 1 January 1996.
The nursery comprises 39,000 m2, including 5,300 m2 of modern coolhouses. 40,000 m2 of open ground can be kept dark for growing Asters. During spring the area is expanded with 60,000 m2 rented nursery.
Since it started, the nursery has developed constantly and is now among the leaders when it comes to internal transport and technology. On average we have 14 employees including qualified and unskilled gardeners, all part of a dynamic team with quality and development as top priorities. Great importance is attached to innovative thinking both in production and development. The nursery produces about 3.7 million plants each year.
The Gardener’s own products
The brand name “Gardener’s Own” is the collective mark of quality for our Primula series and our Osteospermum, Hortensia and Victoria Aster bedding plants.
The name is to show that the plants are tended and cared for just as carefully as if they were intended for our own garden.
The nursery uses methods of cultivation based on proud family traditions going back four generations. We aim to be leaders in the field of automation, transport and technology, but we are also very conscious that it takes personal commitment and professional pride to create and maintain high quality.
